FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
July 21, 2007 8:41am Update
Dear Friends of Adam:
Adam continues to do well. He has another skin graph surgery on Tuesday, 7/23/07. This surgery is an actual skin graph which means they will take
skin from one area of his body and place it in another. (The previous operations have been "stretching" skin over burned areas.)
We are taking Caesar (the boy who found and brought Adam to safety), his mother and Sarah (Adam's second rescuer) to visit with Adam at Animal Hospital of Cotati on Monday, 7/23/07. Those interested may write a card, letter or e-mail to Caesar so he has some awareness of the support and gratitude we feel toward him for saving Adam's life. Sarah has been volunteering in our office assisting with sending out thank-you's and putting together an Adam scrapbook with all of your notes, e-mails and cards, so she has seen the impact Adam has had on people all over the country.
The best piece of information I have for you is that we believe to have in our possession one of Adam's siblings. The girls accused of torturing Adam claimed they set the other 5 trapped kittens free from their cages. One of the investigating Animal Care & Control officers has been working with a woman who lives at Papago Court (the neighborhood where the incident occurred) who lives right next to the location where Adam was found burned. She reported seeing two black kittens in her back yard shortly after the fire. ACC loaned her a trap and on Thursday, 7/19/07 the officer collected a two month old, black, male kitten that the woman captured. The kitten, now named Sampson, was brought to us for placement into our Adoption Program. The Papago Court woman is attempting to trap the 2nd kitten.
When Animal Care & Control Officer, Andrew Lee first brought Sampson to us, he was hissing and cowering in the back of his cage. But today he is purring and mewing for attention. He may have a case of ringworm and a slight upper respiratory infection, so he'll be seeing one of our veterinarians today for an overall health check and treatment. From there he'll enter a foster home, for socialization and healing.
Is he Adam's brother? Although there is no absolute way to tell, we
believe so because:
- He showed up at the right place (Papago Court right behind where Adam was burned) at the right time (a few days post event.)
- He is the right age (2-3 months old)
- He is the right color - black (All of the kittens that were trapped with Adam were black except for one black and white)
- And lastly - He looks like Adam! (We'll have pictures of him on
our web site!)
I spoke with the DA's office on Wednesday 7/18/07. They claim the case is progressing as expected.
The Press Democrat had another Adam article and darling picture in their paper on Friday, 7/20/07. (It can also be viewed on their
web site.)
Since this story was picked up by the Associated Press we have been receiving calls and e-mail from all over the country. The outpouring of love and affection for Adam is absolutely overwhelming. Our hope is to bring to the forefront that there are way too many homeless animals EVERYWHERE. PLEASE encourage everyone you know to have their companions neutered. Kittens are NOT cool. And adoption should only be an option if you intend to make your companion a permanent member of the family.
Adam is not an isolated tragedy that occurred in a bad section of town. At this very moment there are people packing their belongings,
loading up the moving van, heading for parts unknown and leaving their
"beloved" cat behind...sitting, all alone on the front doorstep - homeless! THIS is a tragedy that occurs every single day in every one
of our neighborhoods. Only WE have the power to stop it.
As always, many thanks for your care and concern.
